More than a Wedding Photographer
- A Person Watching for the Moment
Behind Chhaayakar is Ganesh Sharma, a wedding photographer who believes that the photographs that matter most are often the ones that were never planned. A glance between two people. A parent quietly watching. A laugh that lasts only a few seconds. The small moments between the big ones.
That is where we like to be.
Our approach is simple pay attention, understand the people in front of the camera, and be ready when something real happens.
Meet Ganesh Sharma
Ganesh Sharma founded Chhaayakar in 1999 and continues to personally photograph weddings across Varanasi today, more than 26 years later.
Experience of this length changes how a wedding is photographed. It means anticipating a moment a second or two before it happens rather than reacting once it has already passed. It means recognising when a ceremony is about to shift and repositioning quietly rather than causing a disruption. It means working confidently as light changes rapidly through a Varanasi evening, and making calm decisions during the small, inevitable disruptions that happen at every real wedding, rather than letting them cost a moment.
This is the practical value of experience — not simply a number of years, but the judgment that only comes from having photographed hundreds of real weddings, with all their unpredictability.
Beyond weddings, Ganesh Sharma also conducts photography workshops and practical training sessions for working photographers, many of them held at our maternity and baby photography studio, where hands-on learning is prioritised over theory alone. He also leads a photography foundation that supports photographers and photography associations across India. This ongoing teaching and mentoring is why the expertise behind Chhaayakar stays current and continues to evolve, rather than resting on past experience alone. More on this is covered in the next section, and in greater depth on our About page.
Professional Leadership & Continuous Learning
Ganesh Sharma’s work extends beyond photographing individual weddings. Over the years, he has taken on the role of photography educator, workshop speaker, and mentor to other photographers, alongside leading a photography foundation that supports photographers and photography associations across India.
Photography workshops and practical training sessions are still conducted today, often at our maternity and baby photography studio, where working photographers come to learn hands-on rather than only through theory. This continuous involvement in teaching keeps our own team’s skills current, since explaining a technique clearly to someone else is one of the most effective ways to keep sharpening it.
Teaching also sharpens our own practice. Preparing a workshop, answering a participant’s question, or demonstrating a technique in front of other photographers demands a level of clarity that everyday work does not always require. The insights that come out of these sessions are not left behind in the classroom — they feed directly back into how our team plans, shoots, and edits every wedding we take on. This cycle of teaching and learning is part of how professional standards stay consistent across the whole team, not only within Ganesh Sharma’s own work.
This is part of why we describe Chhaayakar as more than a photography service. It reflects a wider commitment to raising standards across the photography profession — through the foundation’s membership support for photographers, through direct training, and through the working example of a studio that has maintained consistent quality for more than 26 years.
A fuller account of this work, including the photography foundation and its membership programme, is available on our About page.

THE CHHAAYAKAR PHILOSOPHY
At Chhaayakar, we do not think of photography as only the creation of beautiful images. A wedding photograph matters because of who is in it and what it represents a mother seeing her daughter get married, a father’s expression during a ritual he has waited years for, a moment between two families that will not happen in quite the same way again.
Photography, done well, is also about solving problems before a family ever notices they existed arriving early enough to understand a venue’s light, carrying backup equipment so a technical fault never costs a moment, and reading a ceremony’s flow so nothing important is missed.
We place quality before quantity, and treat every booking as a responsibility rather than a task to complete and move past. We are not interested in convincing anyone that we are the best photographer in Varanasi through marketing language. We would rather let the actual planning, the actual involvement of our team, and the finished album speak for themselves.
This is why our work aims to stay meaningful years after the wedding day itself not simply attractive on the day it is delivered, but still worth returning to when a couple’s own children are old enough to ask about it.
Photography Journey
Since 1999
Chhaayakar’s story began in Varanasi in 1999, at a time when wedding photography largely meant formal, posed portraits taken on film. Ganesh Sharma started the studio with modest equipment and a straightforward idea — that a wedding deserved to be documented honestly, not only staged for the camera.
Over more than 26 years, the studio has moved through significant change: film gave way to digital, formal portraiture gave way to candid, story-driven coverage, and a single photographer’s practice grew into a dedicated studio and, eventually, a photography foundation supporting other photographers across the country.
What has not changed through these years is the underlying approach — personal involvement, careful planning, and a refusal to compromise on quality for the sake of taking on more work. Every wedding photographed since 1999 has added to a body of real, practical experience that no equipment upgrade can substitute for.
Our Photography Process & Team Standards
A wedding photographed well begins long before the wedding day itself, and the quality of the final album depends on decisions made at every stage, not only on the day of the ceremony.
Before the wedding, we spend time understanding the schedule, venues, key rituals, and what specifically matters most to the couple and their families, so nothing important is left to chance.
On the wedding day, photography is documented candidly as it happens, supported by planned portraits, with backup equipment always on hand so a single technical issue never costs a family a moment they cannot get back.
After the wedding, images are processed through a RAW workflow and edited carefully for natural colour accuracy, before being sequenced into a premium album designed to tell the wedding’s story rather than simply present photographs in the order they were taken.
THE CRAFT BEHIND THE PHOTOGRAPH
What Creates a
Great Photograph?
A common assumption is that a great wedding photograph comes down to an expensive camera. In our experience, that is only a small part of the story.
A photograph that still feels meaningful ten years later usually comes from several things working together.
- LIGHT
- TIMING
- TECHNOLOGY
- STORY
Seeing the Light
A wedding day never gives you the same light twice. Understanding how it changes through the day helps us choose the right position, lens and approach for each moment.
Being Ready for the Moment
Camera settings need to change quickly. More importantly, experience helps us anticipate a moment before it happens, rather than reaching after it has passed.
What Happens After the shutter
We shoot and process in RAW because it preserves significantly more image information. This gives us great control during editing while protecting natural skin tone and accurate colour.
From Photograph to Album
A wedding photograph doesn't end on a screen. Paper, printing, sequencing and building all influence how your story is ultimately experienced.
